What is algae?
That green or black stuff on the siding of your house? That’s most likely algae. Unfortunately there’s no real way to stop it from ever growing. The algae on your house thrives best in moist areas subject to shadows. Go check out the north facing sides of your home and you’ll likely see a bit of this pesky plant-like organism has made a home.
Although algae is harmless, it causes a few problems:
1) doesn’t look great. Coming home every day to a dirty home isn’t something anyone dreams of, so periodic washes make all the difference! If you’re looking to sell the home, clean siding can yield higher offers, which far outweigh the efforts or cost of a house wash.
2) Algae can lead to lichen growing on the house. Not necessarily required for lichen to grow, but they are symbiotic partners - helping each other grow. Lichen can be removed with the same washing methods, but is frequently more difficult to remove.
3) It holds onto moisture. We already know it thrives in damp, shaded areas, but it doesn’t only grow on the outside of siding. Improperly installed, or loose siding can allow the algae to grow underneath the siding and affect the surfaces and material underneath.
Overall, sure it’s not the worst. But with periodic washes, the siding will stay clean and potential damage can be avoided!
