What is the Difference Between Mold and Algae?

As far as pressure washing is concerned, algae is a huge reason why I’m in business. Over time, this pesky plant like organism grows on the outside of homes, on bulkheads, on brick, and stucco and homeowners want it gone. It’s not exactly desirable, seeing as it can lead lichen and moss growth - both are even trickier to remove!

But what’s the difference between Algae and Mold?

Algae, as mentioned above, is a plant like organism that grows in damp, shaded environments. Check out the north side of a home that hasn’t been washed in a few years and you’ll likely see it! It’s largely a cosmetic issue, although, given enough time, it can consume the limestone granules in asphalt roof shingles.

Mold on the other hand requires dark, damp, and poorly ventilated areas, such as basements, inside attics and walls. Mold can cause structural damage and health issues. Mold must be removed and or treated by mold specialists and frequently demolition and a rebuild of the affected area.

New England Surface Solutions does not work with mold in any way, shape, or form. If you think you have a mold issue, please consult a friend of the business: SERVPRO of Derry/Londonderry
